Church! No Way! You Are All Hypocrites!!!!!

YouTube player

Of all the arguments heard about not attending church the title, “Church! No Way! You are all hypocrites!” I think is the one I have heard most at least some form of that statement.  A majority of the time, when I hear that excuse, it is merely an attempt to deflect the gospel conversation I am engaged in.  But, what is vitally important is to remember and understand there are many who genuinely have this view from personal experiences.

Today, in the western church, I think we are seeing the result of this accusation in the number of people who said they grew up in the church but no longer attend.  Likewise, I also believe, we in the church are quick to dismiss this accusation of hypocrisy.  Instead of getting the context and understanding we can become quick to think the other individual is only out for an argument or to become divisive.  While I agree we should always direct people to Christ Jesus being the head of the church and he is our example.  I also know, from Scripture, we are to be the example and represent Christ accurately; as much as we can.  Look at the following section from 1 Corinthians 1.

10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.
11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you.
12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, “I am of Paul,” and “I of Apollos,” and “I of Cephas,” and “I of Christ.”
13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
(1 Corinthians 1:10–13)

Just a few verses before Paul is given such a commendation to the church at Corinth.  He description is such, I think a vast majority of churches would like to be spoken of similarly.  The immediately Paul starts in his bringing to light all that is occurring and how it is not keeping in step with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.  This loving rebuke/reproof happens throughout until the end of chapter 15.  How could such a church, gifted as it was, have such devastating issues?  Issues which eventually led to it no longer being in existence.

A question I like to ask believers is this, “if a new Christian or an unbeliever was to come up to you and ask what is Christianity really like; could you answer, ‘Watch me!'”?  Here is a short video (Here) by D A Carson that puts this question front and center.  Its called, “Watch me!” and it is very to the point of the topic.  If you cannot answer a person to watch you when they want to know what Christianity is like – why?

Join with me as we examine this accusation and how we, who are called by the name Christian, can insure it is not a part of the gathering we are a part of.

May God the Father be glorified!  May Christ Jesus the Lord be honored and exalted!  May you, the believer, be encouraged and exhorted!  May you, the non-believer, come to Christ Jesus by repentance and faith…God’s grace through that faith to believe on the Lord Jesus alone for the forgiveness of your sins and eternal peace with God.  Grace and peace to all who are in Christ Jesus the Lord.

Making Disciples Where You Are – by Shane Sands

YouTube player

Recently, I was asked by a young man what I thought it meant for a person to be godly or to live godly.  My reply, while not fancy with robust words or elegance boiled down to this.  One key aspect of a person who is godly and/or living godly is if they are making much of CHRIST JESUS the LORD.  Interestingly, when examined, the Scriptures no where encourage or expect a true believer to remain silent.  It is quite the opposite, those who are recognized as being true followers of the LORD JESUS are the ones obeying, from love, the great commission to go and make disciples.

Join with me on this short video as we examine what it means to make disciples where you are.  We will examine several Scriptures as well as examining several reasons given why people do not share CHRIST JESUS, HIM crucified and HIM risen and returning.  May GOD be glorified.  May you be encouraged, exhorted and inspired by GOD and for GOD to go forth and proclaim HIS excellencies.  Grace and peace to all who are in CHRIST JESUS the LORD.  Amen.

18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
(Matthew 28:18–20)

14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”
(Romans 1:14–17)

The Word Of God – The Bible

YouTube player

One area, of great sadness, I encounter when speaking to fellow believers regarding their walk with the LORD JESUS CHRIST, is their daily reading (or lack there of) of HIS Word, the Word of GOD – the Bible.

A recent survey found that a very low number of “Christians” read their Bibles regularly outside of church.  Making this survey all the more alarming is the definition or standard given.  A regular Bible reader is defined as a person who reads their Bible more than four times a year outside of church.  Wow!  So much can be said about this, but the one which jumps out at me is lack of love for GOD.

This short video we look at why reading the Word of GOD – the Bible is the expectation and necessary for the believer.  It is not something we add on, but what builds us up in respect to salvation.

13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.

(1 Thessalonians 2:13)

Death to Life – The Love of God in Christ Jesus by Shane Sands

There is a saying, “the higher you go up the flag pole, the more your rear end shows”. Many will equate this to a person climbing the ladder of life and career and not being afraid to make the tough decisions which might bring about negative consequences.  While that can be an interpretation, what I think is more applicable is how this relates to sin, more pointedly to CHRIST JESUS and HIS glorious sacrifice. Death to life, the love of GOD in CHRIST JESUS.

Every so often I go on YouTube and just surf around to see what is showing up on my feed.  There are those animal videos which make you smile with the sound of “Awww” coming from your lips.  There are the other ones which show the traumatic side of animal life/death especially in the wild.  The last two weeks, my mind has had the ending of one of these videos repeating in my head.  It is this particular video which the LORD used to have me think, reflect and mediate about and apply to HIS Word.

Here it was, in the wild, a mother Giraffe has just given birth to her new baby.  A short time later, lions attack and are successful in separating the baby from the mother and apparently ending the life of the baby.  But, that was not the case.  This baby had managed to take two bites to its throat and still get up and get away.  This baby then went through four days of no food or other nourishment.  Finally, you see the baby giraffe in a body of water when the look on its face…the look in its eyes, show its pain and its suffering was finally beyond what it could take.  There is even a fear displayed, a deep sadness I cannot explain.  The baby falls backward into the water, submerges and never comes up.  This baby came into the world and suffered, its only life was one of suffering.  Even now, as I think about that video and the way that animal looked at its end brings me nearly to tears.  Why could not the lions have just ended the animals life?  Why could not the bites to its throat have crushed its wind pipe and let the suffering end?  Why did it have to go on for four days – a baby doomed to die, it was just a matter of time?  Why has the LORD allowed me to be so affected by this part of the wild, with this one particular giraffe?

Then my mind was directed by the SPIRIT and remembered something from Scripture:

14 “However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”
15 So Nathan went to his house. Then the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.
16 David therefore inquired of God for the child; and David fasted and went and lay all night on the ground.
17 The elders of his household stood beside him in order to raise him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.
18 Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died
(2 Samuel 12:14–18)

Then as I thought about this Scripture another text came to my mind:

15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;
17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
(Genesis 2:15–17)

Then it began to come clearly into my mind.  I was receiving instruction and for the first time beginning to see the hope behind the horror of the suffering baby giraffe.  What astonished me was the LORD did not remove the deep sadness and empathy I had for the baby giraffe – I was and am grateful to the LORD JESUS for it.

You see, the higher you go up the flag pole, the more you pursue your selfish dreams and have a greater sphere of influence the more your sin will effect others around you.  Quite often the consequences of my/your/our sin will have devastating, if not catastrophic outcomes on our own person, more importantly, on those whom are in your sphere of influence.  When you are by yourself and have a limited number of people in your life your sin still has drastic consequences and even infects those few in your life.  As iron sharpens iron so does one man sharpen another.  The people you are around influence you and you them.  If you were the head of a small company, as the leader of that company you would have a direct influence on many areas of the employees lives you employee.

Lets now examine, David, a man after GOD’S own heart.  This is the one whom GOD found and chose.  It was David from whom the line of the Messiah come forth.  It was this David who brought the king and the priesthood back to one city, Jerusalem.  David is the very one who had the plans and began storing up material for the temple to be built.  How could we forget it was this David who defeated Goliath with a sling and stone.  David was a mighty man of GOD, he is a legend throughout GOD’S Word.  However, David was also a man who caused so much death, destruction, heartache, pain and suffering.  Because of one sin David brought about the death of 72,000 people!  But look at the Scripture above.  Look at what one sin of David led too!  First, he was not where he was supposed to be, out to fight with the armies of Israel.  Next, he looked upon the nakedness of another man’s wife, Bathsheba.  Next, he had her summoned to the palace and then slept with her.  Next, she became pregnant and informed King David.  Then, in an attempt to cover it up, David attempted to have her husband, Uriah, get drunk and sleep with her.  When that did not work, he had Uriah murdered.  Now, look closely at what is said.  GOD said, “because by this deed you have given the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child born to you shall surely die.”  It is bad enough that David caused adultery, murder and sowed sin in the army.  This act gave rise to the enemies of GOD to blaspheme.  The judgement which came as a result of this, was the death of the child born in adultery.  But, pay even closer attention.  GOD is the one who inflicted the sickness that lasted seven days before the child died.  The child did not die right away.  David’s sin caused the suffering of a baby child.  This child, like the baby giraffe, was born and its life was only of suffering.

Now, lets go all the way back to the beginning to Adam.  Adam was created in the image of GOD.  Adam was placed on the earth to be the representative of GOD.  Adam was the person in charge of the entire earth.  GOD only issued Adam on negative command – don’t eat of the tree of good and evil or you will die.  GOD made woman from man and Adam was the head of her. Adam had charge to teach her the command of GOD and to care for her.  Instead of obeying GOD’S Word, Adam added to GOD’S Word which led to Eve being deceived.  Not only was she being deceived by the devil,  Adam stood there, did not protect her, and even listened to her and ate of the forbidden fruit.  Because of Adams position, in the world, at that time.  He was the representative of GOD and all mankind; his sin brought about death and destruction to all mankind and creation!  Trace it back and all the pain, suffering, sin, death, destruction, and hopelessness come from one man – Adam.  That baby giraffe suffered because Adam did not obey GOD!

Hopefully, at this point, everyone who reads this should be in a place thinking about the harm to themselves and others their sin has caused!  But, the world, like Adam, wants to blame GOD for their sin!

The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
(Genesis 3:12)

If GOD had not given Adam the woman, (the very good blessing he needed!), he would not have sinned.  GOD it’s YOUR fault!

3 The foolishness of man ruins his way,
And his heart rages against the LORD.
(Proverbs 19:3)

But, from the very beginning GOD had a plan to work through the very suffering and death which sin brought about and through HIS SON JESUS, whom HE sent, to make all things new.

12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
(Romans 5:12)

24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
(1 Peter 2:24–25)

1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.
2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,
4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”
5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”
6 Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.
7 “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
(Revelation 21:1–7)

What shines brighter than all the darkness of sin and death is, JESUS CHRIST the LORD, the SON of GOD, whom the FATHER sent to make a way where there was none!  When we see the effects of sin as they are and realize that very same condition is in us – each of us – we can understand what a blessing of GOD it is.  Because, once we know how vile and repugnant sin is to GOD, and all the pain, destruction and death it causes,  we then can look to GOD, who is love and see what HE has done and is doing in and through HIS SON JESUS.  You can cry out for HIM to save you from your sin and HIS wrath and be made new…a new creation in CHRIST JESUS and for CHRIST JESUS!  GOD is not an evil GOD!  GOD is holy and MUST punish sin regardless of intent.  GOD is good and must remove sin because of the death it brings!  GOD is love and did not leave us hopeless, but sent HIS Son to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.  JESUS lived the life we could not – sinless.  HE died the death we deserve!  The third day, after being placed in a tomb – GOD raised HIM from the dead!  The sacrifice and penalty for sin was paid – the innocent for the guilty!  The acceptance of that sacrifice and validation of GOD’S Word was accomplished by the resurrection.  Now, on the basis of JESUS’ life, rising from the dead we have the guarantee of forgiveness and life if we come to the FATHER, by faith, through JESUS.  The old things passed away – behold new things have come!  JESUS the beautiful, majestic, KING of GLORY – worthy is HE!  If you do not know JESUS as LORD and SAVIOR come today while you still have time!  Tomorrow is not guaranteed!

8 But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
(Romans 10:8–10)

You Never Know How God Will Use Your Suffering by Shane Sands

You never know how GOD will use your suffering.  No pain, no gain a lesson we need to learn from Stephen.

As a young believer, who was being encouraged to go out and share my faith, I was troubled.  I knew that GOD had saved me and given me eternal life in HIS SON JESUS, but I was afraid.  I didn’t know enough.  I thought I would be laughed at, mocked, or even worse, someone would ask me a question I could not answer.  How would I handle the rejection, the scorn, or even my own inability to defend the faith?  Here I was, forty years of age, and I was afraid.  I would even become nervous just putting a tract on a car window.  Where was all my strength, determination, discipline, and love?  Then there came the first time I was going to open air preach.  Oh man, I had never felt so insecure.  My mind raced with all the doubts and fears the evil one could sow in my mind and heart.  Something was happening.  You may suppose something was happening with me and my walk with the LORD – true, it was.  But, I think, actually, the real change was what was happening inside the others around me.

9 But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen.
10 But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. (Acts 6:9–10)

However, it is at this juncture of the narrative where we do not want to follow down the path of Stephen.  There comes a fork in the road where, on the one path, you will have common ground or perhaps, mutual respect for one another.  The other path, there is sure to be adversity and pain.  The pain does not always mean physical.   There are two paths to choose from and you will make a choice no matter what you do.  Here comes the rub – the words of the LORD JESUS come magnified in our minds:

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
(John 12:24)

We all know what the call of the LORD is.  We all know the sacrifice HE made.  We all know the love HE has for HIS FATHER and for us that put HIM on that cross.  Yet, when it comes time for us to bear HIS shame, time and time again, we fall short.  I know this feeling and I pray never feel it again.  But, for Stephen and others, it was one word that compelled them to move down the road less traveled: love.

10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another
(1 John 4:10–11)

You see, once you have tasted the kindness of the LORD and allow your eyes to be focused on HIM and HIM alone, you will declare the praise of JESUS and be HIS witness, regardless of the circumstances or results.  It is, in effect, the result of John 12:24 followed up in the next two verses:

25 “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.
26 “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”
(John 12:25–26)

Friends you never know how GOD is using your suffering, that precious gift of HIS to you, to build HIS church.  All to often, we are short sighted and fail to see through the lens of GOD’S Word.  The very foremost object of your affection is the LORD and to be pleasing to HIM.  Your discomfort, your bearing the shame of CHRIST is also being used to strengthen others.  It is a seed which goes deep down and if/when the LORD is pleased, it is watered and grows!  It grows in the hearts of unbelievers.  But, it also grows in the hearts of believers, causing them to gain strength and encouragement to press on.  You never know how GOD is going to use your suffering!  We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses!  Perhaps, the rejoicing in heaven among those who have gone before, resonates and rings out in worship and praise in the LORD JESUS, as they see HIS grace working in and through you!  For all you know, the sharing of your faith and bearing the shame of CHRIST (worth more than all riches) may be used for the next Paul to be influenced and go forth.

58 When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

The stoning of Stephen

The stoning of Stephen

(Acts 7:58)

19 “And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You.
20 ‘And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and watching out for the coats of those who were slaying him.’
(Acts 22:19–20)

You never know how GOD will use your suffering to build HIS church; how HE will exalt HIS SON JESUS in and through you.  But one thing is absolutely for certain, your suffering is not in vain or overlooked.  Indeed, it is precious in the FATHER’S sight – it shows you love HIS SON more than you love your life.  The FATHER will, in due time, honor you and honor those who have lost their life for the sake of HIS SON JESUS.

I made mention earlier, the area where I think GOD was using my growth was not so much with myself, but others.  It has been nearly fourteen years since the LORD truly saved me.  I have stayed in touch with several of my brothers from the beginning of my walking with the LORD.  Several have drifted off and gone down a different road.  Some have continued in the faith, but have settled into a routine life.  But, ever so often, the LORD grants for me to have a glimpse of how HE has been using me in other’s lives.  Even now, as I feel my body hurting and the slow degeneration, physically and mentally, which comes from age, I get a glimpse of watching the LORD work in and through me.  There are some moments, when, like a ray of sunshine breaking through the trees or gray clouds, I see a small portion of the LORD’S grace, in my suffering, toward others.  I don’t know how GOD will use my suffering to build HIS church or exalt HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.  Perhaps, it is best I don’t know.  What I do know is the LORD has placed in my heart a desire to live godly and to be pleasing to HIM – to love HIM.  For me, that gift is beyond what I could have ever hoped for, given my life previous to my new birth.  It is my hope to be a branch abiding in CHRIST and that HE will, in and through me, produce much good fruit to maturity.  I know growth will require pruning and where there is pruning, there is pain.  I think I can finish this up by the following Scripture and trusting in HIM to use it to build HIS church – just as Stephen did.  Grace and peace friends.  Glory to GOD!  Worthy is the LAMB!  May the LORD JESUS CHRIST ever be honored and exalted!

12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
13 So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.
14 For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.
(Hebrews 13:12–14)
