Whatever! by Holly Sands

Have you ever heard the phrase “Coram Deo”? It is a Latin phrase, meaning, “before the face of God”.  R.C. Sproul said that the essence of coram Deo is to “live one’s entire life in the presence of God, under the authority of God, to the glory of God”.

In my prayer time this morning, I began meditating on just what it means to live in that manner. Scripture tells us:

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. – Col. 3:17

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ – Matt. 25:37-40

For In Him we live and move and have our being… – Acts 17:28

It really struck me today that I need to remember that whatever I do, I do it unto the Lord; good, bad, or indifferent. My life (and yours too) is always under the watchful eye of our God. We are the temples in which He dwells. Do we really think we live unto ourselves? Our lives are not lived away  from the the Lord, but in Him. Therefore, everything that is done by us is done to Him.

How carefully we should live before Him!

Love Letters from God to You by Shane Sands

1 Peter 2:2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation

All too often people say they can know and worship GOD in their own way. But, it is these same people who will readily admit to not reading GOD’S Word. Here is a short video which will encourage and exhort you to be daily/faithfully in GOD’S Word.

Willing Sacrifices by Holly Sands

Then the Spirit of the LORD was upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, “If you will give the Ammonites into my hand, then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.” So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD gave them into his hand. And he struck them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a great blow. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel. Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot take back my vow.” And she said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the LORD; do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, now that the LORD has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.” So she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions.” So he said, “Go.” Then he sent her away for two months, and she departed, she and her companions, and wept for her virginity on the mountains. And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year. – Judges 11: 29-40

Have you ever been reading something in the Scriptures that seemed, for lack of a better term, troubling to you? This happened to me this morning while reading the above portion. I quickly read over it and at the onset, it seemed to be something that I would rather not consider – not only was it a tragic story, but horrific to my Western mindset. So, I turned to the next section of scripture that I was scheduled to read. However, as I began the next chapter, it was like a piece of black paper came over my eyes and I could not see anything before me. I sensed the Spirit of God directing me to go back and read the account of Jephthah and understand it.

When I went back and reread it, I was struck by two things: (1) His daughter was his ONLY child; and (2) She was a WILLING sacrifice. It also struck me that God knew ahead of time, before Jephthah made this tragic vow, who would be the first to come out of the house – that it would be his one and only child. Oh, what a test this must have been! How his heart must have broken when she came out the door dancing and celebrating. I can hardly stand to think of it.

Beyond the tragedy of this moment, it reminded me of the account of Abraham with Isaac. Abraham had only one son of the promise who he was willing to offer to God and Isaac was a willing sacrifice to be offered. There is no mention whatsoever of Isaac trying to run away. There is no mention of Isaac squirming to get off the alter. No, he submitted his will to that of his father’s.

Of course, the ultimate example of offering one’s only child is with God and His only Son – Jesus – who was a holy and willing sacrifice – who also submitted His will to that of His Father’s.

In light of these examples, I cannot but help to connect a portion of scripture from the Apostle Paul to these examples of offering and sacrifice.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  – Romans 12:1

We are now to willingly offer ourselves to God. We are to offer ourselves as that sacrifice – our wills, our plans, our hopes, our dreams, our desires, our all – must be laid upon the alter of sacrifice, for the worship and praise of God. And not only are we to offer ourselves, but we must do so willingly, not with a sense of sorrow because it’s the only life we have – but joyfully, knowing that it is His glory we seek and not our own.

You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. – 1 Peter 2:5

The Six “Know That’s” by Holly Sands

Sometimes when you are reading through the Word of God, certain verses seem to be emphasized in 3D. Today was one of those mornings as I was reading in 1 John 5.

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.  And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” (1 John 5:13-15, 18-20)

“We know that” stood out to me. It’s mentioned 6 times in these 5 verses .What is it that we know?

  • We know that…if we believe in the name of the Son of God – Jesus – we have eternal life. We know that Christ is living, working, and reigning in our hearts. We have assurance of salvation.
  • We know that…if we ask anything according to His will – He hears us. Do you ever think, when you are praying, “God’s eye is upon me right now”? This is the confidence that we have toward Him! What glorious access we have to the Father, through His Son!
  • We know that…if He hears us, then we have the requests that we asked of Him. He hears the prayers of our faith, asking that which He has promised. He will not deny us for He is faithful to His word.
  • We know that…everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning. A good test to see whether you are in the faith: when you sin, does it grieve your heart to know that you have grieved God’s? Do you despise the sin that required so great a sacrifice from God’s own Son? Those who have been born of God are kept by God and have been equipped with full armor to battle the deceitfulness of their own hearts, the lure of the world, and the temptations of the evil one.
  • We know that…we are from God. The Spirit of God testifies to our spirit that we belong to Him, as opposed to those who are in the world and addicted to it’s enticements.
  • We know that…the Son of God has come and given us understanding that we may know Him who is true. Jesus, the light of the world, has given us light (understanding) to know God, the Father – who is the one and only true God.

What a glorious certainty that we have been given by God! Hallelujah!

Study, Practice, and Teach – in That Order by Shane Sands

…because the good hand of his God was upon him.
10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

Ezra 7:9–10

Study, practice, and teach – in that order – are the characteristics of a mature Christian, devoted to Christ Jesus and His kingdom.  The above quote, from the book of Ezra, shows why God’s good hand was upon Ezra.  Ezra was a priest and extremely competent in God’s Word.  Yet, Ezra knew that even the most gifted and educated man is merely a child, in comparison to the Word of God.  Ezra knew he must remain humble and seek the Lord continually so he would grow in the grace of God.

Study:

First, Ezra had set his heart to study God’s Word.  Ezra had to humble himself and be examined and changed by the living Word of God.  This is the same for us who follow Christ now.  We are supposed to show ourselves able to handle God’s Word accurately and correctly.  A good indication of this is when a person comes to God to be changed – and not, to change others.  Ezra, as mentioned, was extremely competent in the Scriptures.  However, Ezra also understood we are continually growing and God is continually conforming us more and more into the image of His Christ.  Even in his old age, Ezra knew he had much to learn.  Thus, he continued to humble and delight himself in the study of God’s Word – and so should we.

Practice:

Book knowledge is not enough on its own (1 Corinthians 8:1).  If you have not had a life changed, becoming a new creation in Christ Jesus, then you have not been transformed by the Word of God.  Before Ezra could move on to teaching he had to first be walking in a manner worthy of the calling of God.  Only then, once he was walking in truth, could he be useful to help others.  Only by being an example, could his words be validated.  Ezra had as his main focus to be pleasing to the Lord.  Ezra was loved by God and as a result, Ezra wanted to do everything he could to be pleasing – and so should we.

Teach:

Every gift of God is not for you alone.  God has entrusted it to you so you may be a benefit to other believers and a light to the lost.  Once you have studied and put into practice what you have learned, God calls you to make disciples and to build up the saints.  The reality is, you are always teaching.  What matters is – what is being taught, and does your life validate what is coming from your lips?  Ezra knew this.  Ezra had been entrusted with much wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in God’s Word.  Ezra also understood it was not good to have this gift of God and not share it with others (Luke 12:47-48).  Ezra purposed in his heart to teach the way of God, to the people of God, so that they would walk in a manner worthy of God – and so should we.

18 And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was begging Him that he might accompany Him. 19 And He did not let him, but He *said to him, Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

Mark 5:20

And so should we!  Grace and peace to all who are in Christ Jesus the Lord.

Two Words by Shane Sands

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1)

There are two important words you need to know, if you are thinking of being a Christian, or if you want a deeper understanding of what being a Christian means.

The first word is Justified.  From the beginning of Romans 4 through Romans 5:1, the word justified is a legal term proving someone right (what is the “therefore” there for?).  In order to stand before God and prevail, He must declare you righteous.  You must be found innocent.  Look at the context of the verse itself – “having been justified.”  This is the prerequisite before moving on to the next word.  How is this justification obtained? By faith.  This first word justified means you have come before the Judge, God Himself.  Examining you with the law, He has found you innocent of not breaking the law and this is on the basis of faith.

The second word is peace.  This is a relational or family term.  Peace means there is no hostility or ill will. God’s accepts you and adopts you into His family.  You have peace with God, the very one who was your Judge.  Your peace comes by way of being justified by faith.  You have peace with God based on being justified.  Now the most important question is this – what is the foundation of that faith which brings justification and peace with God?  The answer is Jesus.

Who is Jesus?  Jesus is, from eternity past to eternity future, the Son of the Living God, the God who is your judge.  Jesus is the only, uniquely begotten Son of God, who came into this world, born of a virgin.  Jesus (Immanuel – God with us) came into this world, sent by His Father, to live the life we could not (sinless and holy), die the death we deserve (He is our substitute – a sacrifice for sin), be buried and rise victorious on the third day.  God raised Jesus on the third day, accepting the sacrifice of His Son and vindicating His word.  God now makes a way for a sinful person to have their sins forgiven by placing their faith in Jesus, who is sinless and holy, for the guilty and rebellious.  Jesus willingly offered Himself up as that sacrifice and substitute to pay the penalty for sin.  If you  acknowledge your guilt, turn from your sin, and then cry for mercy on the basis of faith in Jesus, to God the Father,  you will be justified and then have peace with Him.  Come today and be reconciled to God through His Son Jesus Christ the Lord while you still have time.

Let him who has ears to hear – hear.

20      Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
21      He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.  (1 Corinthians 5:20-21 NASB)
